The Irish Republican Army (IRA)

Submitted by • September 26, 2013

The Irish Republican Army (IRA) emerged in 1916 as an advocacy group for Irish sovereignty (Derkins, 2002). Its principle aim was to advocate for freedom from British rule. As at 1916, the British occupation of Ireland had lasted at least 800 years, a period in which the British treated native Irish Catholics with harsh discrimination and extreme brutality.
